About XRF or PMI SCANNING

XRF scanning, also referred to as PMI Scanning is a fast, non-destructive method used to identify the elemental composition of metals and alloys, making it ideal for PMI (Positive Material Identification) in industrial settings. It’s widely used in making sure that alloy in question meets the description. PMI Scanning tells you what the mix of various metallic elements in a particular sample you are testing with an XRF Scanner gun. It is widely used in scrap import, fabrication, and quality control to ensure materials meet required specifications.

🔍 What exactly Is XRF Scanning?
X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) is a technique that uses high-energy X-rays to excite atoms in a metal sample. When these atoms return to their normal state, they emit secondary X-rays that correspond uniquely to each element in the Periodic Table. A handheld XRF Analyzer detects these emissions and instantly displays the concentration of elements like Fe, Ni, Cr, Mo, Mn, Al, etc.. This allows verification of the grade of stainless steel, carbon steel, or exotic alloys without damaging the material. This Non Destructive method of testing or NDT is why PMI Scanning is so useful.

🧪 Why XRF Scanners Matter are used for Positive Material Identification – PMI:
In industries like scrap import, petrochemicals, fabrication, and construction, knowing the exact composition of a metal is often critical for various reasons including pricing, safety and compliance. PMI using XRF Scanners ensures that materials match the required specifications, especially when dealing with customs inspections or BIS certification. The process is portable, fast (results in seconds), and accurate — making it ideal for on-site testing at ports, warehouses, or fabrication yards.

A visual Illustration of the process

The scanner emits X-rays that hit the surface of the metal and excite the atoms of various metallic elements in the sample. The electrons in those atoms jump to a higher orbit because of this excitation. However they soon lose that energy and return to their original orbits around the nucleus of the atom. Each element in the periodic table has a uniquely identifiable X-ray spectroscopy signal that it emits during this process. The analyser in the XRF Scanner, also known as PMI Scanner picks this up and reads the information. It is then able to glean information about the exact composition of various elements in the sample metal.

Modern scanners like the ones we have from Vanta go a step beyond and are able to match the composition with a list of known grades in standards like ASTM – American Society for Testing and Materials. Often stating what particular grade this is. Like SS – 304 or SS – 316.

Why Choose Us

Because we offer the most accurate, fast and reliable portable XRF/PMI scan results. That helps your business in getting quick resolutions.

– 01
portability

Our machines are Portable and therefore can be carried anywhere. So weather its a big chunk of metal you want to get tested or the contents of a container, we can get to it and test it.

– 02
accuracy

Vanta machines are the most accurate and reliable in the world of XRF scanning. You can always rely on our accuracy weather its precious metals or scrap that’s being imported/exported for melting.

– 03
speed

It takes 3 beats for the X-ray to leave the gun and bounce back to the sensors in the XRF Scanner. If its set to the “Precious Metals” setting then it takes 5 beats BUT either way, it takes seconds to tell what a sample is made off!

– 04
experience

We have been doing this for a long time and have thorough knowledge of metals and alloys. We also have a working knowledge with edge cases that helps us in knowing how best to deploy our Vanta XRF Scanners for best results.
